Knitting Alternatives For Correcting A Mistake In

Rip it! Just like in the fairy tales, every knitting gal has had to kiss a few frogs from time to time. But I said rip it, not “ribbit.” Chances are you have found mistakes and had to rip out some of your work to go back and correct them. This can be very disheartening, especially when you are a beginner and/or when you may have to rip out several rows just to get back to the mistake. Make several mistakes in your work and you can actually wear out your yarn by tearing it out over and over again. But what’s a knitter to do? A well-traveled friend of mine told me that Turkish knitters accept their knitting flaws as a tribute to God. The flaws are just little reminders that humans fall short of the God’s glory; they accept their flaws as small tokens of their own human imperfections. So embrace your work; accept it as is, warts and all.OK; so unconditional love is just not your thing. There are other options; camouflage those mistakes! There are countless ways to cover knitting mistakes. You can embroider on top of them, cover them with a patch, or just stitch them down with matching yarn. Patches can be purchased pre-made, or make your own from matching and/or coordinating yarn or fabric. If possible, cover the mistake with a decoration, a button or some other type of closure. Use your imagination and find other ways that work for your pieces. When faced with a very large mistake or one that changes the shape of the overall finished piece, you can even approach it with scissors — this is not for the faint of heart! Before you cut away anything, run a strait stitch of matching yarn through the knit fabric bordering the mistake. Cut inside the stitching. Once you have cut away a piece of knitting, it will be necessary to catch all the resulting loose fibers by sewing them to another piece of knitted fabric, cloth, seam binding or hem tape. This takes patience and lots of stitching.Kiss those ugly toads by embroidering little hearts or other frames around them. Actually draw attention to the mistakes and have them become a component of the design. Another way to do this is to attach beads, charms and other embellishments. You will be surprised at the compliments you will get when you use this approach. If you are simply unable to shed your perfectionist tendencies, by all means, go ahead and rip it. Once your yarn becomes worn or frayed from a lot of ripping, do not continue to use the weakened yarn for your knitted project; instead replace it with new yarn. Be sure to buy extra yarn in the same dye lot if you are a ripper!
